Eliminate Distractions and Get More Done In Your Business

I remember when I first started working from home, my kids were little. Like, really little. And I thought I was being so productive because I was "at my desk" all day.

Except I was not. I was checking email every 5 minutes. Scrolling Facebook "for just a minute." Getting pulled into a group text. Starting a task, stopping halfway through, getting distracted, and starting something else.

I was busy. But I was not building anything.

It took me way too long to realize: busyness is not productivity. And the entrepreneurs who actually grow businesses are not the ones who work the most hours. They are the ones who work the smartest and ruthlessly eliminate anything that does not move the needle.

The Distraction Tax

Every time you get pulled away from deep work, you pay a tax. Not just the 5 minutes you spent scrolling. The real cost is the 20-30 minutes it takes to get your focus back after an interruption.

Psychologists call this "attention residue." When you switch tasks, part of your attention stays stuck on the previous task. You are physically at your desk, but mentally you are still in last night is email thread.

I see this destroy coaching businesses all the time. Coaches who are "working" 10 hours a day but not getting clients. The problem is not intelligence or work ethic. The problem is fragmented attention scattered across a hundred small tasks that each feel productive but collectively accomplish nothing.

The 10000 Dollar Exercise: Audit Your Time

For one week, I want you to track every 30-minute block of your workday. Write down what you did.

At the end of the week, look at it honestly. Ask yourself: what actually generated revenue or moved my business forward?

I will bet you dollars to donuts that the answer is: less than 3 hours a day. Maybe 4 if you are lucky.

The rest was noise. Emails. Social media. Group chats. "Research" that was actually procrastination. Admin tasks that could have been automated or outsourced.

Build Fortresses Around Your Best Hours

Most people is best thinking happens in the same 2-3 hour window every day. For me, it is first thing in the morning. 6 to 9am is when I do my best strategic thinking, my best writing, my best client work.

So I protect those hours like a dragon guards gold. No meetings. No calls. No email. I do not even open my browser during that window unless it is directly related to the task at hand.

Your best hours are your most valuable business asset. Guard them accordingly. Treat any interruption during that time as the emergency it actually is.

If you have young kids and mornings are chaos, find your window. It might be during nap time. It might be after bedtime. It might be stupid early in the morning before anyone wakes up. But you have one. Find it and defend it with your life.

The Two-List Strategy

Every Sunday evening (or first thing Monday morning), I write two lists:

List 1: The 3 Most Important Things

These are the 3 tasks — not 5, not 10 — that if I accomplish nothing else this week, I will feel good about. These get done first. Every day. No excuses.

List 2: The Overflow List

Everything else. Admin. Emails. Social media. Content. Backburner projects. This list is a parking lot, not a to-do list that controls me.

The rule: List 1 gets worked on before anything on List 2. Always. The 3-step formula to getting clients fast is actually a framework for identifying what belongs on List 1 — the activities that directly lead to revenue.

Boundaries With Everyone (Including Yourself)

One of the hardest parts of working from home — especially if you have a family — is setting boundaries. The kids need things. The spouse asks questions. Friends want to grab coffee "since you are home anyway."

You have to become comfortable with saying no without over-apologizing or over-explaining. "I am in the middle of something, I will be available at 2pm." That is it. That is the whole script.

Also: set phone boundaries. I have mine set to grayscale. All notifications off except phone calls from my wife and actual clients. My phone is a tool I use intentionally, not a slot machine I pull lever on every 5 minutes.

The same goes for email. I check email at specific times — 9am, 1pm, and 4pm. Not all day long. Checking email is not working. Responding to email is not building the business. It is maintenance. Keep it in its lane.

Automate or Eliminate: The Administrative Trap

I am amazed at how many coaches spend hours every week on tasks that could be automated or eliminated:

Manually sending onboarding documents? Automate it. Scheduling calls back and forth via email? Use Calendly. Writing the same response to FAQs over and over? Put it in a template or a bot.

Any task you do more than twice should either be: 1) systematized and automated, or 2) eliminated entirely.

There is no 3) continue doing it manually forever. That is the trap that keeps you buried.

I have spent money on automation tools for my business. Some of them did not work. But the ones that did saved me hours every single week. That is not an expense — that is buying time at 20-30 dollars per hour that I can use to do revenue-generating work instead.

Distractions Are a Choice (Even When They Do not Feel Like One)

Here is the hard truth: you choose your distractions.

No one is forcing you to check Instagram. No one is putting your phone in your hand at 11pm. No one is making you open your email before you have done your most important work of the day.

The chaos of modern work feels like it is happening to you. But it is not. It is happening because you have allowed it to. And you can un-allow it.

I am not saying this to be harsh. I am saying it because it is actually liberating. If the chaos is your choice, that means you can choose differently. You have more control than you think.

The entrepreneurs who build profitable, sustainable businesses are not superhuman. They are just people who made a series of deliberate, boring, unsexy choices to protect their time and attention — and then executed with consistency.

Find your window. It might be 5am before anyone wakes up. It might be nap time. It might be after bedtime. You have at least 2-3 hours somewhere. Protect that window ruthlessly, and protect it from your own tendency to fill it with "easy" tasks instead of important ones.

How do I know if something should be automated or eliminated?

Any task you do more than twice is a candidate. If it requires your unique judgment and relationship skills — keep it. If it is routine, repetitive, and does not require a human — automate or eliminate it. If you are doing the same administrative task manually every week, that is a problem you have chosen to keep.

What about email? How often should I check it?

I check email at specific times — 9am, 1pm, and 4pm. Not all day. Email is a tool, not a barometer of your self-worth. Checking it constantly fragments your attention and makes you feel busy without making you effective.

What about breaks? Are not those important?

The goal is not to grind 24/7. It is to be fiercely productive during work hours so you can be fully present during non-work hours.
